2012年、4月2日。ここはウィスコンシン州の奇妙な町、スロースピット。観察してみよう。

見てごらん、SCP財団の職員が1人、町のアパートから車で職場へ向かっている。サイト87は全スタッフが宿営するのに十分な広さがあるが、中には街中に住みたいという者もいる。家賃は安いし、食事も美味しい。人も親切だ。

車の中にいる男はジェイソン・ヘンドリックス博士。38歳の彼は白髪混じりの茶髪で、左頬に生まれつき鱒の形の痣がある。そして、乳糖不耐症であるにも関わらず、彼はダンキンドーナッツのラテを飲んでいる。今のところ本人に不耐症である自覚はないようだが。

また、彼は昆虫を極度に怖がっている。これからの数日間は彼の人生で最悪の日々になりそうだ。

サイト-87、昆虫学部門:

メアリー・チャーチウェル博士を紹介しよう。彼女は32歳で、その分野ではトップの昆虫学者の一人だが、部局長になることはないだろう。婦人科医学や女性学のような男性優位の分野で働く女性である。しかし、今日からそれが変わるかもしれない。

この日、チャーチウェル博士は、E-20053というカゲロウの一種を丁寧に解剖していた。E-20053は本で潰されない限りは不死身であるようで、水中に沈められようが、頭を切り離されようが、殺虫剤をかけられようが、さらには冬の寒さに晒されようが、生き延びることができるのだ。

「しつこいわね、とっとと切らせなさいってば」鎧にも似たカゲロウの甲殻のせいで、彼女のメスは切れ味が悪くなっていた。「また切断レーザーの許可を取らなきゃいけないの？」いくらメスを当ててもびくともしない。結局、未だに蠢いているカゲロウの甲殻を持ち上げて解剖することを彼女は思いついたが、その際カゲロウを手で潰してしまった。「マザー・オブ・ア・ファック……」彼女は手で顔を覆い、ため息をついた。

カゲロウは死の間際にフェロモンを放出するが、これはスズメバチが外敵に襲われた際に放出するものと似ている。フェロモンは人間には感知不可能だが、同種のカゲロウは5マイル以上離れた場所からも嗅ぎ取ることができる。そしてこのフェロモンは、仲間が殺された場所ならどこへでも群がれ、と呼びかける役割を果たしていた。

そんなことなどつゆ知らず、メアリーは潰れた標本を片付け、研究室へ送付した。30分もしないうちに彼女は報告書を手にするだろう。 この虫の分類は誤っており、本当はカゲロウではなく、少し大きな蚊であったという内容の報告書を。

時刻は現在午後7時16分。もうすぐ日没が訪れる。そして、日没と共にやってくるのは蚊の大群。蚊の大群と共にやってくるのは……

死神だ！

翼が生えた不死身の死神がサイト87に襲来した。外にいた警備員たちはあっという間に体液を吸い尽くされ、迫り来る大群に弾丸は役に立たない！ 温室では翼が生えた死神から身を守ることはできないが、幸いにも中には誰もいない。

サイト87は封鎖される。近隣のサイトからの応援が入るまで、この状態は無期限に維持されるだろう。

4月3日の夜明け。外の大群はシールドを貫通することができず、全ては冷静沈着である。ブーンという音が絶え間なく聞こえている。ミーム学部門の予備の耳栓が1個5ドルで売られ、ロックダウンの影響で通常のサイト運営はすべて停止されていた。

サイトの機動部隊であるMTF-シグマ-10が装備を整え始める。コードネーム"ナマケモノの腕"は、昆虫学部門が開発した特殊な殺虫剤グレネードを装備している。また、小型の火炎放射器も装備している。

北口、東口、西口から、防咬傷性の全身防具を装備し、実験用の家畜を餌にしながら移動するという作戦であった。蚊の大群が家畜の群れに群がったところを、機動部隊が兵器で仕留める。

彼らは間違った餌を選んでしまった。E-20053が餌とするのは人間のみである。

機動部隊の大半が無力化されていく……後にキーター・スキーター1として知られるようになる存在たちによって。ヘンドリックス博士はその一部始終を、恐怖に震えながらモニター越しに見ていることしかできなかった。

4月4日、コーヒーが底を尽きた休憩室に緊張が走った。近くのドーナツ屋にも行けず、サイト87は当面の間カフェイン抜きのコーヒーで我慢することになった。塩クラッカーは食べつくしてしまったが、少なくともカフェテリアの食事はまだたくさん残っていた。

最初の殴り合いはウェスト博士とマターソン博士の間で勃発した。E-5991が発生させる音波パルスを使って液化させることで、キーター・スキーターを殺せるのではないかという理論をウェストは立てていた。しかしマターソンの指摘によれば、そうするとサイトの大部分が破壊され、そこにいる全員が死んでしまう可能性が高いという。この時、「あんたは経験無いだろうが、俺はある！」「人間のそばで使うのは危険だ、先週の実験で使ったネコを見てみろ！」といった言葉が交わされた。

一方、昆虫学部門はというと、リンチされるのを防ぐため、研究室に立てこもっていた。大群がやってきたのはE-20053の死骸が原因だろうという話がリークされたのだ。「こう考えてみなさいよ！」とチャーチウェル博士はドア越しに叫んだ。「私たちが死んでも、あいつらを追い払えなくなるだけだって！」

ヘンドリックス博士は自分の部屋に閉じこもり、常に虫除けスプレーを噴霧し、万が一に備えてかなり大きなハエたたきを持ち歩くことで満足していた。外に出るのは食料と水を取りに行くときと、収容違反が起こっていないか監視モニターで確認するときだけであった。彼は虫が嫌いだった。それはもう、本当に。

4月5日、キーター・スキーターが有糸分裂によって繁殖していることが明らかとなった。苛立ちと恐怖による叫び声は耳をつんざくばかりであった。

4月6日、化学部門は実験のためにドラフトチャンバーの電源をつけることを決断した。その理論的根拠は、「可能な限りいつも通りに暮らしたいのなら実験を続けるしか道はない」というものであった。

残念ながら、ドラフトの電源をつけるということは、換気口が外部に開放されるということを意味していた。有毒なガスを外に出せば、より悪いものを中に入れることとなる。その研究室にいた気の毒な者の最期の言葉は、「ああ、なんてこった、俺の肌が！」だったという。

キーター・スキーターは敷地の隅々まで広がり、5分もしないうちに職員の宿舎に到着した。ヘンドリックスの部屋まで辿り着いた群れが凄まじい圧力でもってドアを破壊すると、ヘンドリックスは狂ったようにハエ叩きを振り回して応戦した。その殺戮劇は伝説的で、彼の部屋は1インチの隙間も無く虫のはらわたで覆い尽くされていった。

ハエ叩きを空中に掲げながら、ヘンドリックスは大声で喚いた。「いい加減にしてくれ！このクソサイトのクソ虫どもにはもううんざりだ！」彼は部屋から飛び出し、そして……

ウェイス管理官が額を押さえたのはこの日の会議で8回目であった。「ヘンドリックス博士、もう十分です。もしあなたに事件の説明をするつもりがあるのなら、せめてジャンルを統一してください。自意識過剰のコメディの域に入り込んでいますよ」

「で、ですが、ウェイス管理官！やつらはそこら中に群がっていたんです！外だって……私がいなければ血の海になっていたはずですよ！もしなっていなかったとしても、一体どちらの方が酷いのか！」

「ヘンドリックス博士、あなたは第5実験室の実験用マウスを対象とした幻覚剤を摂取したのですよ。3日間部屋に閉じこもり、巨大な目新しいハエ叩きを手にサイト87を走り回り、壁と職員を無作為に叩いていました。私は至って正気ですので、この行為を理由としてあなたをレベル2の研究員に降格させることもできます」ウェイス管理官はため息をつき、顔を擦った。 「しかし、私にはそうできません。理由は分かりますね？薬が意図した通りに機能しなかった場合、困ったことになるからです」彼女は首を横に振った。 「これは警告と見做してください、ヘンドリックス博士。実験室で食事をするときは今まで以上に注意を払いなさい。もっとはっきり言いましょうか？これから実験室では何も食べないようにすること。これで分かりますね？」

「イ、イエス、マダム……」どうして巨大なハエが管理官の振りをしているのか不思議に思いながら、および腰な博士は椅子に座り込んだ。「も、もう行っても？」

「良いですよ。もし幻覚が続くようなら、群れに身を委ねなさい」

「はい？」

「トラウマセンターへの報告を忘れないこと」

「ええ、勿論、分かりました、そうします」ヘンドリックス博士は席を立ち、管理官室のドアから飛び出していった。

ウェイス管理官は自身の座席にもたれ、ため息をついた。まだマシだと彼女は思った。少なくとも私が働いている場所はサイト19ではないのだから。
